One of Georgia's "Golden Isles," St. Simons gets its casual, beach-town feel from a quaint village full of shops, restaurants and art galleries, as well as its historic landmarks and coastal beauty. The island offers a number of budget-friendly hotel options for a casual getaway. If the large, Oceanside resort is not your speed, try a cozy bed and breakfast or rent a villa for your family vacation.

Like the other Sea Islands, the St. Simons beach consists of firmly-packed sand which is great for biking and for little feet. Toddlers love the shallow, warm pools left by the outgoing tide. Also like the other Sea Islands, the famed Loggerhead Turtles crawl ashore at night to lay eggs near the dunes.

In contrast to some of the less developed islands - like nearby Jekyll Island and South Carolina's Kiawah Island - the moderate development on St. Simons means many more beach activities are available, such as the popular sport of kite-surfing as well as catamaran and windsurfing rentals.

With more hotels come more people - so those looking for a beach that feels untouched by humanity may want to look into those less developed islands or explore neighboring Little St. Simons Island or the exclusive Sea Island. Active families and those with teens, however, will find plenty of fun on St. Simons!
