Attractions
The Public Squares throughout the city are renown for their beautiful landscaping. Savannah was designed in 1773 around four open squares, both for militaristic purposes as the squares were used for military exercises, and for fire protection by spacing city buildings apart. As the city expanded, more were added in the 18th and 19th centuries and though a few were demolished in the 20th century (which preservationists are now working to restore), the city has maintained 21 squares showcasing beautiful plantings and fountains, as well as historic statues, memorials, plaques, and other tributes to the city's rich history.
All of the squares are located in the historic district and within a half-mile area - thankfully making it very easy to explore these beautiful spaces on foot!
The Waterfront: In the area surrounding River Street, visitors will find an eclectic spot where old meets new. Historic landmarks sit next to modern restaurants, bars and shops. Replicas of ancient tall ships sail alongside colossal container ships. For fun, food, festivals, and a bit more history, you can't miss the Waterfront.
Despite its relatively small size, Savannah offers a wealth of fun activities to help you explore and enjoy this unique City. Savannah tours, and in particular, Savannah ghost tours, are among the City's most popular attractions. While there are no beaches in Savannah itself, check out Tybee Island for the nearest beach getaway!
