Here's what you need to know about the Hilton Head Island beaches - Like most of the Sea Islands' beaches, the sand on Hilton Head is very firmly packed making the beaches flat and smooth. This makes them ideal for walking, jogging, and biking. The hard sand is also easier for young children whose little feet might otherwise have a tough time in deep, loose sand.

The Hilton Head Island beaches can get a bit busier than the beaches on some of the other islands simply because there are more resorts and therefore more people. Because the beaches are so large, though, it's not hard to find a more isolated stretch of sand, particularly earlier or later in the day. Active types will also enjoy the availablity of more activity options, like parasailing, jet-skiing, and much more!

Travel to Hilton Head Island

To get to this beautiful island, you can fly into either of two airports:

• Hilton Head Island Airport (airport code HHH), located about 5 miles from all Island resorts. Most of the major airlines fly into this airport.

• Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (airport code SAV), located approximately 45 miles south of the Island. From this airport, drive up 95 North and follow the directions below.

From I-95, take exit 8 and go east on Highway 278 following signs to Hilton Head Island. After you drive about 18 miles, you will cross a bridge to the island. After the bridge, look for signs for the Cross Island Expressway. If you are going to the south end of the island (Shipyard, Coligny, Forest Beach, Sea Pines) stay to your left and use the expressway ($1.25 toll). Otherwise, keep right and stay on Highway 278 Business.

You can also stop in the Welcome Center after the bridge (this is also where the Coastal Discovery Museum is located). At the Welcome Center, pick up island maps and information on upcoming local events.
