Amelia Island Activities & Attractions

Amelia Island activities will have you exploring this beautiful and historic island by bike, horse, Segway, sail, helicopter and more! Between rounds of golf and tours of Amelia's attractions – just remember you're here to relax too!

Amelia Island offers some activities, like biking, that are popular on all the Sea Islands – and it also offers some unique options you won't find on the other islands – like a helicopter tour!

With all these activities, plus the downtown Fernandina Beach area with its restaurants and shops, you'll have plenty of options to keep you and your family having fun all vacation long!


Amelia Island Golf Courses

Looking to hit the links while on vacation? Here are the public Amelia Island golf courses available to Island visitors:

  • Fernandina Beach Municipal Golf Club - The only public course right on the Island, offering 18 holes of golf. The Fernandina Beach Golf Club also has a practice putting green, driving range, pro shop, and a clubhouse with food and a bar. Reservations required 5 days in advance. Located at 2800 Bill Melton Rd., Fernandina Beach. Tel: 904-277-7370.

  • Golf Club at North Hampton – Located just off Amelia Island in Yulee, an 18 hold course is open to the public and offers a short game facility with a chipping green, putting green, and fairway bunker. Open every day 7 a.m.-8 p.m. and Sundays, after 1 p.m. Children 17 and under play for free with their parents. Call ahead to schedule a tee time. Tel: (904) 548-0000.

  • Royal Amelia Golf Links: A par-72, 18 hole course open to the public with holes overlooking the Amelia River and the Intracoastal Waterway. (904) 491-8500.

Guests of the Amelia Island Plantation Hotel can play on that resort's four 18-hole courses - Long Point, Oak Marsh, Ocean Links, and Royal Amelia. Likewise, guests of the Summer Beach Resort have access to the private course at that resort.



Amelia Island Tennis

Amelia Island is known for its tennis. Until 2009, The Amelia Island Plantation hosted a stop on the annual WTA tour for women's pro tennis. Now the Resort hosts a Pro Circuit men's tournament that is sure to be a draw to tennis enthusiasts.

For guests, tennis courts are available at a number of resorts on Amelia Island, including the Amelia Island Plantation which offers 23 clay courts as well as a tennis clinic. Courts are also available at the Amelia Island Surf 7 Racquet Club and the Summer Beach Resort.

Guests without tennis facilities in their resort can play on the public courts on Fernandina Beach. Located on Atlantic Ave at 13th Street -interested visitors need to either call the Recreation Department at 904-277-7350, or pick up the keys for the tennis courts at the Atlantic Avenue Community Center.


Swimming on Amelia Island

In the very rare case that your resort, hotel, or rental villa does not have access to a pool, Amelia Island has a couple public pools available for your use. These public pools are located at:

  • Atlantic Park Recreation Center: 2500 Atlantic Avenue, Fernandina Beach. Tel: 904-277-7350.

  • Martin Luther King Park: 1200 Elm Street, Fernandina Beach.


Amelia Island Biking

Hop on a bike and explore Amelia Island! Be sure to ask for a map of the bike trails on the island from the bike shop or your resort. And remember – helmets are required by law in Florida!

    » IMPORTANT TIP: Keep the bike shop's number with you as you ride. If you get a flat or need a repair while you're out, most places will come to you to fix it or bring you back to the shop. Check with the shop you choose when you rent to make sure they provide this service. You may not need it, but if you do, it can save your whole day!

Many resorts and inns provide bike rentals to their guests, but in case yours doesn't, try these rental companies:

  • Beach Rentals & More: Rent bikes, scooters, beach gear, ocean kayaks, and surfboards. Located across the street from the beach at Sadler Rd.

  • BikeSmyth: Located at 1745 S. Eighth St., Fernandina Beach. Tel: 904-277-0031.

  • Cycling & Fitness Center: Located at 11 S. Eighth St., Fernandina Beach. Tel: 904-277-3227.


Horseback Riding

A horseback ride along the beach is a romantic and memorable way to see this beautiful Island. You can book a trail ride at either of two stables on Amelia Island:

  • The Kelly Seahorse Ranch: Offering horseback trail rides along the beach, the Kelly Seahorse Ranch is located within located within the Amelia Island State Park. No experience necessary. Sunset rides and pony rides are available. Tel: 904-491-5166.

  • Ride the Beaches of Amelia: Horseback riding on the beach. Experience required. English and western riding available. Tel: 904-277-7047.

Explore the island's native flora and fauna up close as you paddle through the marshes or along the coast.

  • Kayak Amelia: Take a guided tour or rent your own kayak or canoe.


Boat Tours & Excursions

Get out on the water while you explore the island's natural coastal habitat by boat. These tour companies offer a variety of cruises including ecotours, dolphin watching, bird watching - or just relax and sail around the island!

  • Amelia River Cruises & Charters: A narrated tour of Cumberland Sound and Cumberland Island aboard a pontoon boat.

  • Fly-fishing Amelia Island: Offers birdwatching and wildlife eco-tours on the water.

  • Hot Ticket Charters: Offering nature tours and charter fishing. Located at 2000 Sunrise Dr., Fernandina Beach. Tel: 904-321-1668.

  • On The Water Adventures: Offers tours through the marshes in a small powerboat to see dolphins, alligators, and more native wildlife.

  • Voyager Ventures– Sail on a 100ft tall ship replica for a unique and relaxing tour of Amelia Island. Tel: 904-123-4567.

  • Windward Sailing School– Take a sailing lesson or charter your own sailboat for a few hours or a few days!

Guests of the Amelia Island Plantation can also see the sights, sail, or fish aboard the Amelia Angler.


Amelia Island Charter Fishing

Fishing is popular on Amelia Island for the Grouper, Kingfish, Spanish mackerel, Snapper, Sea Bass, Amberjack, Tarpon, Redfish and more that teem in the waters just off the coast. Plenty of charter operators offer fishing excursions – both inshore, nearshore, and offshore. Here are a few of these local charter fishing companies:

  • AC Charters: Offers light tackle and fly-fishing charters.

  • The Angler's Mark: Offers light-tackle and flounder fishing.

  • Fishtown Charters at Amelia: Inshore and offshore fishing. Tel: 904-277-0757.

  • Flounder Gigging, LLC: Offers a unique, night time shallow water charter to fish for flounder.

  • Fly-fishing Amelia Island: Offers light-tackle and nearshore fishing.

  • "Miss Content": Fish aboard the Miss Content with Capt. David Burns. Half or full day offshore fishing charters.

Natural & Historical Tours

Gain a deeper understanding of, and appreciation for, Amelia Island's history and its lush coastal habitat. Amelia's tours let you explore the island by foot, bike, Segway or bi-plane!

  • Amelia Island Carriages: Private and group narrated tours of Amelia Island's historical points of interest. Custom tours are offered as well and can pick you up from almost any downtown location, including your B&B! I had a very nice tour of the historic homes of Fernandina Beach in a beautiful carriage pulled by "Boomer," the 'largest horse in northest Florida' as we were told and a local celebrity on Amelia Island!

  • Ecomotion Tours: Unique "offroad" Segway tours through wooded island trails, ancient dunes, butterfly gardens, and a natural preserve.

  • Kayak Amelia: Offering bike eco-tours around the island in addition to kayak tours. Reservations required.

  • Old Towne Carriage Company: Enjoy a private, 30 minute guided tour of Amelia Island's historical points of interest.

  • Amelia Island Museum of History: Offers historical walking towns of Fernandina Beach, ghost tours and even an educational pub crawl.

Guests of the Amelia Island Plantation can take nature tours offered by the Nature Center that is part of that resort. Biking and Segway tours and rentals are also offered out of the resort's Amelia Island Village Shop.

Amelia Island Historical & Cultural Attractions

These attractions educate visitors on Amelia Island's fascinating history and international influences. Known as the "Island of Eight Flags," Amelia Island is the only U.S. location to have been governed under 8 flags throughout its history - France, Spain, Great Britain, the Patriots of Amelia Island, the Green Cross of Florida, Mexico, the Confederate States of America, and the United States. Check out the Amelia Island Museum for the details!

  • Amelia Island Lighthouse The Amelia Island Lighthouse overlooks Egan's Creek and Ft. Clinch State Park and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. Access to the Amelia Island Lighthouse is limited to tours through the City of Fernandina Beach Parks & Recreation, which are offered the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month. You must call at least 24 hours in advance to book a tour. Tours depart from the Atlantic Avenue Recreation Center. Note that visitors are NOT allowed to climb the lighthouse steps.

  • Amelia Island Museum of History: Features exhibits outlining the history of the area, including its original inhabitants, to the struggles leading to the areas international influences, and the role of the area in the Civil War. Tours, ghost walks, and an educational pub crawl are offered through the Museum.

  • Fort Clinch

  • Fort Clinch State Park: Over 1,000 acres of beaches, nature trails and salt marshes containing a Civil War fort, a fishing pier, and 11 miles of trails and bike paths. Tours are available.



Kids Activities

Several Amelia Island hotels offers camps and programs just for kids and teens, including the Ritz-Carlton and the Amelia Island Plantation.

Apart from these kid-specific programs, your best bet for children's entertainment is just to bring them with you too all of the above – biking, swimming, dolphin-watching, carriage-riding, and more! They're sure to have a great time exploring Amelia Island with you!
